A very good crowd of 64,876 was officially declared at the MCG for the first day of the second test between Australia and South Africa on Boxing Day (December 26, 2022). There were 29,306 fans in attendance at the Gabba on the first day of the first test between the two sides earlier this month, which Australia won comfortably.

While not a 80,000+ crowd on the first day, this 64,876 attendance was higher than the attendance at the MCG for Aus v SA back in 2008 (63,263 back then on Boxing Day, against a significantly better South African side)

At the G, Australia again chose to bowl first after winning the toss. South Africa suffered two major collapses during the day- first going from 56/1 to 67/5 and then from 179/5 to 189 all out.
