A crowd of 29,306 was in attendance at the Gabba in Brisbane for the first day (Saturday, December 17, 2022) of the first test between Australia and South Africa- a record for a non-Ashes game at the venue.

South Africa were bowled for 152 after Australia chose to field first after winning the toss, with the visitors’ batting fragility exposed on a green Gabba wicket. Only wicket keeper Kyle Verreynne (64) and veteran Temba Bavuma (38) scored anything of substance for the Proteas. In reply, Australia were 145/5, at stumps with Travis Head unbeaten on 78.

29306 Attendance

The previous highest crowd at the Gabba before this Aus SA match for a non Ashes test was the 26,353 fans who had turned up for Australia vs Pakistan in 2016. The Ashes record is 39,315, back in November 2006.
