Bangladesh will be locking horns with Sri Lanka in the first match of Asia Cup 2018 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday, September 15.
Both teams are placed in Group B along with Afghanistan. Sri Lanka have won the Asia Cup five times, but the Tigers have never managed to get their hands on the trophy so far. This shapes up as a massive game- Afghanistan are a rapidly rising side, and their spin attack could be very tricky to face in the UAE, which means both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be hoping for a winning start.
The Sri Lankans would be hoping for their captain Angelo Mathews to come good. They would be relying on the likes of Kusal Perera, Upul Tharanga, and Niroshan Dickwella to impress. However the Islanders will be without Akila Dananjaya, who was impressive when they beat South Africa a few weeks ago at home. Dananjaya and his fellow spinners caused all sorts of problems for the hapless Proteas, but they will face batsmen of far higher quality in this tournament.
For Bangladesh they have a bunch of youth and experience and can surprise any team on any given day.
They would be banking on their experienced batsmen like Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah to make a mark.
As seen on High on Cricket Chandimal and Danushka Gunathilaka have been ruled out due to injuries.
Their absence is sure to be advantageous to the Bangla tigers. The most recent clash between the two teams was that ill tempered Nidahas Cup game, where the Tigers beat the hosts in the last over to book their spot in the final.
However in general, Sri Lanka have had the better of Bangladesh in 2018, where they defeated them in a Tri-Nation ODI final in January. They also emerged victorious in Test and T20I series which were held in February.
Sri Lanka have had an outstanding record against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup where they defeated them in 11 out their previous 12 encounters.
