Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka by 91 runs in the Group B match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Monday and with that, they knocked out five-time champions out of the Asia Cup.
After winning the toss and electing to bat the opening pair of Mohammad Shahzad and Ihsanullah laid a solid foundation and added 57 runs for the opening wicket, before Akila Dananjaya dismissed Shahzad leg before wicket for 34 runs.
Rahmat Shah and Ihsanullah Janat then added 50 runs for the second wicket before the latter was dismissed by Dananjaya for 45.
The 25 year old right hander made a useful contribution with the bat by scoring 72 runs of 90 balls to help his side post a challenging total. His innings comprised of 5 fours.
Hashmatullah Shahidi helped the Afghans post a competitive target of 249 runs, aided by some useful contributions down the order.
For the Sri Lankans, Thisara Perera was their best bowler with figures of 5/55, while Akila Dananjaya claimed two wickets for 39 runs.
The Islanders chasing a target of 250, were rocked early when they lost Kusal Mendis early in the second over for a duck to Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Upul Tharanga and Dhananjaya de Silva steadied the ship by putting on a 54 run stand for the second wicket before De Silva was run out for 23.
Skipper Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera played crucial knocks but failed to help their side cross the line.
For Afghanistan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan scalped two wickets each.
The fourth match of the Asia Cup will be played between India and Hong Kong at Dubai on 18 September.
