England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir claimed figures of 4/84 as the visitors restricted India to 219/7 in response to England’s score of 353 at the end of Day 2 of the fourth Test against India in Ranchi on Saturday, February 24.
Resuming at 302/7, the overnight pair of Root and Ollie Robinson added 45 more runs before the latter perished to Ravi Jadeja for 58.
Bashir (0) was then caught at backward point by Patidar will trying to take on Jadeja. Left arm spinner Jadeja then trapped Anderson leg before wicket for a duck as the visitors were bowled out for 353. Joe Root remained unbeaten on 122 .
In response, India were rocked early as Rohit Sharma (2) edged a delivery from James Anderson to Ben Foakes behind the stumps. The pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill added 82 runs for the second wicket stand before the latter was trapped leg before wicket by Shoaib Bashir for 38.
Rajat Patidar’s poor run continued as he too fell lbw to Bashir for 17. Ravi Jadeja was then caught at forward short leg by Pope for 12.
Yashasvi Jaiswal reached yet another fifty but was cleaned up by Bashir with a delivery that kept low.
Sarfaraz Khan was then caught smartly at slips by Joe Root off Hartley for 14. The left arm spinner claimed his second wicket of the game by trapping Ashwin leg before wicket for 1.
Dhruv Jurel (30*) and Kuldeep Yadav (17*) kept the vistors at bay with an unbeaten 42 run stand for the eight wicket stand as India ended the day at 219/7, still tailing England by 134 runs.
