Joe Root scored a fantastic century as England recovered from 112/5 to reach 302/7 at the end of Day 1 of the fourth Test against India in Ranchi on Friday.
After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett got England off to a solid start. The pair added 47 runs for the opening stand before debutant Akash Deep struck by dismissing the latter caught behind the stumps for 11.
Ollie Pope was trapped leg before wicket in the very same over for a duck. Deep claimed his third wicket of the innings by dismissing Crawley (42) bowled with a one that nipped in.
The pair of Joe Root along with Jonny Bairstow resurrected the innings with a valuable 52 run stand for the fourth wicket stand before the latter was trapped right in front while attempting a sweep off Ravi Ashwin for 38.
The visitors were in further trouble as skipper Ben Stokes (3) was caught right in front of the stumps from Jadeja that kept low, leaving their side in trouble at 112/5.
Root along with Ben Foakes frustrated the hosts by adding 113 runs for the sixth wicket stand before the latter was caught at short midwicket by Jadeja off Mohammed Siraj for a well made 47.
Siraj claimed his second wicket of the match by dismissing Tom Hartley with a peach off a delivery for 13.
India could have dismissed Ollie Robinson leg before wicket in the 81st over off Jadeja, but umpire Kumar Dharmsena was unmoved as India had exhausted all the review.
Robinson (31)* and Joe Root (106)* were unbeaten at the crease as the visitors ended the day at 302/7.
