Shubman Gill scored a fantastic hundred as India set a target of 399 against England at the end of Day 3 of the second test at Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
Resuming at 28/0, James Anderson pegged India back- first by cleaning up Rohit Sharma and then dismissing the double centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal (17) caught at slip while attempting a loose drive.
Gill along with Shreyas Iyer lifted the hosts by adding 81 runs for the third wicket before the latter fell to a fantastic running catch from Ben Stokes for 29.
Rajat Patidar (9) fell soon after, nicked at delivery behind the stumps that kept low from Ahmed. Gill and Axar Patel featured in a 89 run stand for the fifth wicket before the former gloved an attempted reverse sweep off Bashir for a well made 104.
Axar’s valuable innings of 45 ended as he was trapped leg before by Hartley with one that kept low.
KS Bharat (6) poor run with the bat continued as he hit a long hop from Ahmed straight to Stokes at mid on. Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah perished without troubling the scorers.
Rehan Ahmed wrapped up the innings by dismissing R Ashwin caught behind the stumps, as the hosts were bowled out for 255, with an overall lead of 398.
Chasing 399, England opening pair off Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley got their side off to a solid start. The duo added 50 runs for the opening stand before the former fell to a fine diving catch by KS Bharat off Ravi Ashwin.
At the end of Day 3, visitors finished at 67/1, with still requiring a further 332 runs for win.
England 67 for 1 (Crawley 29*, Duckett 28) and 253 need another 332 runs to beat India 396 and 225 (Gill 104, Axar 45, Hartley 4-77, Rehan 3-88, Anderson 2-29)
