Debutant Shreyas Iyer scored a fine unbeaten 75 as India ended Day 1 of the opening test against New Zealand in Kanpur at 258/4 on Thursday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, openers Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill got India off to a steady start. The duo added 21 runs for the opening wicket before the former edged a Kyle Jamieson delivery to Tom Blundell behind the stumps for 13.
Gill along with Cheteshwar Pujara added 61 runs for the second wicket before the former was castled by Jamieson for a well made 52.
Pujara’s long stay at the crease ended as he perished pushing at a Tim Southee delivery outside off stump for 26.
Stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings with a 39 run stand for the fourth wicket. Rahane looked solid in his innings of 35 before he chopped a wide one on to his stumps, leaving India in a spot of bother at 145/4.
However Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja put the hosts on top with an unbeaten 113 run stand for the fifth wicket as India ended Day 1 at 258/4.
