Axar Patel along with Ravichandran Ashwin ran through the England batting line up as India won the pink ball test by defeating England emphatically in Ahmedabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday.
Resuming at 99/3, the pair of Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane added 15 more runs before Jack Leach dismissed Rahane and the well set Rohit leg before wicket for 7 & 66 respectively.
Skipper Joe Root wrecked the Indian middle and lower order by snaring the wickets of Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel in quick succession.
Ashwin along with the tail added some handy runs in the end as India were bowled out for 145 giving the home side a slender lead of 33. The hosts lost the last seven wickets for just 42 runs.
Root picked up his first five wicket haul, while Leach bagged 4 wickets.
England’ second innings started on a disastrous note, as Axar Patel dismissed Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow in the first over without a run on the board.
The duo of Joe Root and Ben Stokes stitched together a solid 31 run stand for the fourth wicket. Stokes looked good in his innings of 25, before being trapped by Ashwin.
The 34 year old star spinner then bowled Ollie Pope and claimed Jofra Archer leg before wicket to reach the landmark of 400 wickets.
Washington Sundar claimed the final wicket of James Anderson as the visitors were bundled for 81 runs, giving India 49 runs to chase.
Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill made light work of the chase, ensuring that this pink ball test was finished in under two days.
Axar Patel was declared the Player of the Match.
With this victory, India have taken an 2-1 lead in the four-match series but they still need to win or draw the final test to confirm their spot in the ICC World Test Championship final.
