Rohit Sharma led from the front by scoring a dazzling 80, as Mumbai Indians defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 49 runs in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
After electing to field first, Shivam Mavi got the Knight Riders off to a good start by snaring Quinton de Kock in the second over.
Rohit along with Suryakumar Yadav added 90 runs for the second wicket, before the latter was run out for a solid 47.
Left hander Saurabh Tiwary played a couple of gorgeous strokes in his knock of 21, before being caught by Pat Cummins off Sunil Narine.
The MI skipper was dismissed in the 18th over, and all rounder Hardik Pandya after striking couple of lusty blows was bizarrely dismissed hit wicket.
In the end Mumbai Indians ended up with a decent score of 195/5 at the end of 20 overs.
Shivam Mavi was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 2/32.
Chasing 196, Knight Riders didn’t get up to the best of starts, as Trent Boult and James Pattinson dismissed both Shubman Gill and Sunil Narine in the powerplay.
Skipper Dinesh Karthik who promoted himself at No 3 added 46 runs with Nitish Rana, before Karthik was dismissed leg before wicket to Rahul Chahar for 30.
Rana couldn’t stay on for long either as he was caught in deep by Hardik, who took an excellent running catch off Kieron Pollard.
The partnership between Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell was key to KKR’s chances, but Jasprit Bumrah killed the contest in one over by dismissing the dangerous Russell with a slower one for 11 and then Morgan caught behind by De Kock for 16.
Pat Cummins smashed ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah for huge sixes in the 18th over, but it was all a little too late for Knight Riders as they fell to a 49 run defeat to give MI their first win in IPL 2020.
Trent Boult, James Pattinson, Bumrah and Rahul Chahar snared two wickets each while Kieron Pollard bagged a solitary wicket.
Rohit Sharma was declared the Man of the Match for his entertaining knock.
