Kagiso Rabada defended 11 runs and bagged a wicket in the first Super Over of the Indian Premier League 2019 as Delhi Capitals defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by three runs at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Saturday.
DC had made three changes with Harshal Patel, Sandeep Lamichhane and Chris Morris coming in for Ishant Sharma, Rahul Tewatia and Axar Patel, while KKR included Nikhil Naik in place of injured Sunil Narine.
After being sent into bat by Sheryas Iyer, Kolkata started badly by losing Nikhil Naik leg before wicket to Lamichhane in the fourth over for 7.
Robin Uthappa who looked good in his short stay was dismissed by Harshal Patel.
Wickets continued to tumble,as the vistors lost Chris Lynn, Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill cheaply leaving them reeling at 61/5, but Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell led their side’s recovery with with some exemplary batting as the duo added 95 runs for the sixth wicket, before the latter was dismissed by Morris for a blistering 62. His knock comprised of 4 fours and six sixes.
KKR skipper Karthik played a supporting role in his innings of 50, as Kolkata Knight Riders ended their innings at 185/8 in 20 overs.
Chasing 186 to win, Delhi Capitals pair of Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan started briskly as the pair added 27 runs in 16 balls, before the latter was dismissed by Piyush Chawla for 16.
The pair of Shaw and skipper Shreyas Iyer put on 89 runs for the second wicket, before the latter was caught brilliantly by Gill off Russell, after he was dropped by the same fielder 2 balls before at deep mid wicket.
Dashing wicket keeper batsman Rishabh Pant failed to get going as he was dismissed for 11 runs by Kuldeep Yadav with DC still needing another 16 runs.
Kuldeep dropped Shaw off the very next ball, but the 19-year-old Mumbai batsman was caught in the penultimate over by Lockie Ferguson for a well complied 99.
With 6 needing off the final over, Kuldeep Yadav gave away just 5 runs as the Capital ended their chase at 185/6, thereby taking the match to a super over.
Batting first in the Super Over, the home side scored just 10 runs for the loss of Iyer’s wicket. Pant in his 4 balls scored only 2 singles and 2 twos in the four balls he faced.
Chasing 11 runs to win, Kagiso Rabada after conceding four off the first delivery removed the dangerous Russell with a superb yorker and gave away just 3 singles, as Delhi defeated KKR by 3 runs in a super over.
Prithvi Shaw was declared the Man of the Match for his magnificent knock.
The 11th game of the Indian Premier League will be double header with Sunrisers Hyderabad taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore at Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings squaring off against the Rajasthan Royals at Chennai on Sunday.
