A sparkling half century from Suryakumar Yadav (61* off 25) helped India end their Super 12 campaign on a winning note as they beat Zimbabwe by 71 runs at the MCG. There was a 82,507 strong crowd inside the G for this clash- the second biggest of the tournament so far (Click here for attendance figures for all India games at the 2022 T20 WC so far).

The result means that India top Group 2 and will face England in the semifinal at Adelaide on November 10, with Pakistan squaring off against New Zealand in Sydney a day earlier. It also guaranteed automatic qualification for the 2024 World Cup for the Netherlands, who had stunned South Africa earlier at the Adelaide Oval and leapfrogged Zimbabwe in the table.

England vs Sri Lanka 2022 SCG Sydney Attendance 24,250 November 5 Super 12 T20 World Cup Report

England all rounder Ben Stokes scored a valuable unbeaten 42 to help his side reached the semifinals of the World Cup as they defeated Sri Lankan by 4 wickets at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. A crowd of 24,250 was present at the SCG for this clash- a decent figure but lower than the 30,351 for Pakistan vs South Africa and the 36,426 for India Netherlands at the same venue.

SL vs Eng

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first, with openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis getting them to a quickfire start. The duo added 39 runs for the opening wicket before Mendis (18) pulled a short delivery from Chris Woakes to Liam Livingstone, who took a fine running catch.

Dhananjaya de Silva then holed out to Stokes at deep midwicket off Sam Curran for 9. Charith Asalanka (8) fell to Stokes, edging one to Dawid Malan at point.

Nissanka looked in fine touch as he reached his half century in just 33 balls. However just as he was threatening to take the game away from England, he skied a delivery from Adil Rashid to substitute Chris Jordan in deep.

Mark Wood then pegged the Lankans back with wickets of Dasun Shanaka (3), Bhanuka Rajapaksa (22) and Chamika Karunaratne (0) in quick succession as they were restricted to 141/8 in 20 overs.

It was a poor score for the Asia Cup champions given that they were 100 after 13 overs, managing less than a run a ball in the final seven.

Chasing 142, England got off to a fantastic start as openers Alex Hales and Jos Buttler added 75 for the opening wicket. However Hasaranga broke the stand by dismissing skipper Buttler (28), caught brilliantly by a diving Chamika Karunaratne at deep midwicket.

Hales (47) fell three run short of a well deserved half-century, as he attempted a slog-sweep off Hasaranga and chipped one back to the bowler.

The English side lost a bit of momentum as they crumbled from 82/2 to 111/5. However Stokes held his nerve and guided his team to a four wicket win. The victory also knocked defending champions Australia out of the World Cup, with England and the Black Caps advancing from Group 1.

Australia vs Afghanistan 2022 Adelaide Attendance 18,672 November 4 Super 12 T20 World Cup Report

Rashid Khan’s fine 48* (23) went in vain as Afghanistan fell short against Australia in front of a 18,672 strong crowd at the Adelaide Oval. The Asian side were 96/2 after 12 overs while chasing 169, needing just 73 off the final 8 overs, but a middle order collapse gave Australia a route back into the game, and despite Rashid’s late game heroics, the hosts held on to win by four runs.

The victory takes defending champions Australia to 7 points, but the margin was not enough for them to leapfrog England on NRR. Should Jos Buttler’s men beat Sri Lanka by any margin tomorrow, they will join New Zealand in the last four from Group 1.

The 18,672 fans in attendance was some 11,000 odd lesser than the 29,302 that had turned up at the same venue to watch India against Bangladesh two days ago. Yesterday’s SCG game between Pakistan and South Africa saw 30,351 in attendance.

Australia owed their victory to Glenn Maxwell, whose fine half century took them to 168/8 after being put in by Mohammad Nabi. He also produced the moment that turned the game the hosts’ way- running Gulbadin Naib out with a direct throw from the deep, just as it had happened with KL Rahul & Liton Das at this very ground on Wednesday.

A fine all round performance from Shadab Khan kept Pakistan’s slim hopes of semi-final qualification alive as they beat South Africa in front of a 30,351 strong crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Islamabad United star smashed a quickfire 52 (22) with the bat and added 82 in 6 overs with Iftikhar Ahmed after Pakistan had been reduced to 95/5 in 13 overs.

Shadab’s first over with the ball also saw him pick up Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram, and that double wicket over was crucial as it came just before rain interrupted play. The two wickets saw South Africa fall way behind on DLS, and when it resumed, they were left needing 73 off the last five, an almost impossible task given that four of them were to be bowled by the Pakistani quicks.

Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat, but again lost Mohammad Rizwan cheaply. Muhammad Haris, only playing because the injured Fakhar Zaman had been ruled out of the tournament, however gave the innings some much needed impetus as he hit 28 in just 11 balls. Haris was particularly severe on Kagiso Rabada, hitting the latter for two sixes and a four in the same over. Anrich Nortje however trapped him in front, and the wickets of Babar and Shan Masood followed immediately after, leaving Pakistan at 43/4.

South Africa had however left out Keshav Maharaj to include Tabraiz Shamsi, and Pakistan slowly started to wrest control back in the period that the spinner and Rabada were bowling. Mohammad Nawaz looked good in his 22 ball 28, but was LBW to Shamsi- there was an obvious inside edge but he chose not to take the review as Ngidi had run him out anyway. The result sees India take a major step towards the semi-finals- an important victory for them after losing to South Africa in Perth a few days ago in front of over 44,000 fans.
