Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav all scored half centuries as India moved to the top of their group table by defeating Netherlands by 56 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, The Men in Blue suffered an early jolt as KL Rahul (9) was trapped leg before wicket by Paul van Meekeren. The ball appeared to be going down the leg side, but Rahul bizzarely choose not to review the decision.
Rohit got a life on 13, when Tim Pringle dropped a sitter at mid on. The Mumbai Indians star made the most of the reprieve as he scored a valuable 39 ball-53, before perishing to Fred Klaassen in the 12th over.
His dismissal brought the in form Suryakumar Yadav to the crease and the latter shared an unbeaten 95 run stand with Virat Kohli (62)* to take India to an imposing 179/2 in their allotted 20 overs. Yadav himself finished on 51 off 25, and reached his half century with a six off the final ball of the innings.
Chasing 180, Bhuvneshwar Kumar drew first blood by cleaning up Vikramjit Singh for 1. Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin ran through the Netherlands top and middle order as they slumped to 63/5 in their chase.
By then the result was a formality, and Arshdeep Singh came back well in the end by claiming two wickets in succession.
However van Meekeren scored three consecutive boundaries in the final over to take his side to a respectable 123/9 in 20 overs.
Suryakumar Yadav was declared the Man of the Match for his breezy knock.
