Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliant 53 and a superb spell of 3/7 by Jasprit Bumrah, as India beat Afghanistan by 47 runs in their Super Eight match at the at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Thursday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, India lost Rohit Sharma early for 8. The pair of Virat Kohli along with Rishabh Pant featured in a 43 run stand for the second wicket before the latter was trapped leg before wicket by Rashid Khan while attempting a reverse sweep for 20.
Kohli perished to a run a ball -24, as he hit a delivery from Rashid straight to Mohammed Nabi at long on. The star leg spinner claimed his third wicket by trapping Shivam Dube right in front of the stumps for 10.
Suryakumar Yadav along with Hardik Pandya resurrected the innings with a valuable 60 run stand for the fifth wicket before the former was dismissed by Fazalhaq Farooqi for a breezy 28 ball-53.
Hardik (32) and Axar Patel (12) made valuable contributions to take Men in Blue to 181/8 in their 20 overs.
Chasing 182, Bumrah got India off to dream start by dismissing the dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz caught behind the stumps for 11. Axar Patel then got into the act by dismissing Ibrahim Zadran (8) caught at extra cover.
Gulbadin Naib and Azatullah Omarzai added 44 runs for the fourth wicket stand before the former perished to Kuldeep Yadav for 17.
Indian spinners struck at regular intervals as Afghanistan lost their last five wickets for 32 runs. In the end they were eventually bowled out for 134 runs.
