Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a fantastic unbeaten 179 as India ended Day 1 of the second Test against England at 336/6 in Visakhapatnam on Friday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal got India off to a solid start. The pair added 40 runs for the first wicket before Shoaib Bashir claimed his maiden test wicket by dismissing the former caught at leg slip by Ollie Pope for 14.
Jaiswal and Shubman Gill added 49 runs for the second wicket stand . Gill looked good in his knock of 34, before poking at a delivery behind the stumps off James Anderson. Left hander Jaiswal brought up his half century by smashing Bashir for six and four off consecutive deliveries.
Shreyas Iyer (27) and debutant Rajat Patidar (32) provided valuable contributions but the duo failed to convert their starts. Jaiswal featured in yet another crucial 52 run stand for the fifth wicket alongside Axar Patel before the latter was caught at backward point by Rehan Ahmed off Bashir for 27.
Srikar Bharat (17) fell just before the end of Day’s play as the hosts ended the Day at 336/6. Ravichandran Ashwin (5*) was not out at the crease.
