Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a breezy unbeaten 76, as the hosts dominated Day 1 of the first Test against England by reaching 119/1 in reply to England’s score of 246 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, England got off to a confident start as their openers added 55 runs for the opening stand.
However Ravi Ashwin broke the stand by trapping Ben Duckett (35) leg before with one that skidded through. Ravi Jadeja then got into the act by dismissing Ollie Pope (1) caught at slip by Rohit Sharma.
England slumped even further when Zak Crawley (20) was caught by a fine catch by Mohammed Siraj at mid-off off Ashwin.
Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow added 61 runs for the fourth wicket before the latter was cleaned up by a peach off a delivery from Axar Patel for 37.
Root (29) then fell to Jadeja, top-edging a sweep to Bumrah at short fine leg. Axar then claimed his second wicket when Ben Foakes (4) was caught behind the stumps with the one that spun sharply.
Ben Stokes took on the Indian spinners by smashing them to all parts of the ground. Bumrah then wrapped up the innings by castling skipper Stokes (70) with one that jagged away.
In reply, Jaiswal along with skipper Rohit Sharma got India off to a magnificent start. The duo added 80 runs for the opening stand before the latter (24), miscued an attempted hit from Jack Leach to Stokes.
Jaiswal and Shubman Gill added 39 runs for the second wicket as India ended the day at 119/1, still trailing by 127 runs.
