Skipper Joe Root scored a scintillating unbeaten 180 as the hosts took a slender lead of 27 runs at the end of Day 3 of the opening test against India at Lords on Saturday.
Resuming at overnight score of 119/3, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow added another 110 runs for the fourth wicket before Mohammed Siraj provided the much needed break through by dismissing Bairstow for 57.
Root and Jos Buttler added 54 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter was bowled by a brilliant inswinger from Ishant Sharma.
At 341/5, England seemed to be running away with the game, but Ishant brought the visitors back into the contest by dismissing Moeen Ali and Sam Curran off successive deliveries.
Siraj then trapped Olive Robinson leg before wicket for 6. Mark Wood sacrificed his wicket following a mix-up with skipper Joe Root.
Mohammed Shami dismissed James Anderson off the final delivery of the day, as the hosts were bowled out for 391, giving them a 27 run lead.
The 31 year old Root remained unbeaten on 180. Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/94, while Ishant Sharma claimed 3 wickets.
