James Anderson claimed 5/62 and skipper Joe Root kept the visitors at bay by scoring an unbeaten 48 as England ended Day 2 of the opening test at 119/3 on Friday.
Resuming at overnight score of 276/3, KL Rahul fell on the second ball of the day as he drove a Ollie Robinson delivery to Dom Sibley at short cover for a fine 129.
Ajinkya Rahane’s horror run with the bat continued as he was caught at first slip by Root off Anderson. Rishabh Pant along with Ravindra Jadeja added 49 runs for the sixth wicket before the former fell to Mark Wood for 37.
Moeen Ali then got into the act by dismissing Mohammed Shami caught at mid wicket as India’s innings began falling apart.
The veteran fast bowler cleaned up the tail by dismissing Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah to complete yet another five-fer.
Jadeja was the last man out for 40 as India were bowled out for 364.
James Anderson was once again England’s best bowler with figures of 5/62, while Mark Wood bagged 2 wickets.
England’s opening pair of Rory Burns and Dom Sibley got their team off to a solid start. However Mohammed Siraj pegged the hosts by dismissing Sibley and Haseeb Hameed off successive deliveries in the first over after tea.
Root and Burns brought the innings back on track with a 85 run stand for the third wicket before Mohammed Shami dismissed the well set Burns leg before wicket for 49.
Skipper Root and Jonny Bairstow remained unbeaten on 48 & 6 respectively as the hosts ended Day 2 at 119/3.
