Chris Gayle and Lokesh Rahul scored respective half centuries, as Kings XI Punjab defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight wickets at Sharjah on Thursday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Royal Challengers Bangalore opening pair of Aaron Finch and Devdutt Padikkal started briskly at the top by adding 38 runs for the opening wicket, before the latter was caught by Pooran off Arshdeep Singh for 18.
Virat Kohli started positively, but lost a bit of momentum after the dismissal of Finch in the 7th over.
Bangalore for some strange reasons promoted Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube ahead of the in form AB de Villiers. The move didn’t work, as both Sundar and Dube scored around a run-a-ball, before falling to Ashwin & Jordan respectively.
The star South African batsman came in at number six. He however couldn’t make much of an impact, as Mohammed Shami got rid of De Villiers and skipper Kohli in the same over.
All rounders Chris Morris and Isuru Udana finished the innings with a flourish by taking Shami for 24 runs in his final over, as Royal Challengers ended up with a fighting total of 171/6 at the end of their allotted 20 overs.
Chasing 172 to win, KXIP opened with the successful pair of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal despite veteran Chris Gayle playing in the XI.
Both the openers smashed the RCB bowlers to all parts of the ground, before Yuzvendra Chahal provided the vital breakthrough by dismissing Mayank for an entertaining 45.
Chris Gayle, playing his first game since January, looked quite rusty and at one stage but found his mojo back by smashing Washington Sundar for two sixes.
The Universe Boss reached his maiden fifty with five sixes and a four before being run out for a well made 53.
With two needed off six balls, Chahal managed to take the game to the last over. Nicholas Pooran, facing his first ball cleared the long-on boundary, as Punjab registered their second win of IPL 2020.
KL Rahul was declared the Man of the Match.
