Off-spinner Washington Sundar took two wickets in the opening four deliveries of the Super Over as India beat Sri Lanka in the third T20 to seal the three-match series 3-0 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
After being asked to bat first, The Men in Blue lost wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal (10), Sanju Samson (0), Rinku (1), Suryakumar (8) and Shivam Dube (13) with the score on 48.
Shubman Gill along with Riyan Parag resurrected the innings with a valuable with a valuable 54 run stand for the sixth wicket before the former was dismissed stumped off Wanindu Hasaranga for 39.
Parag then perished in the same over for a 18 ball-26. Washington Sundar provided finishing touched towards the end by scoring a handy 25 to take the visitors to 137/9 in their 20 overs.
In response,the hosts started brilliantly with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis adding 58 runs for the opening stand. However Ravi Bishnoi broke the stand by dismissing the well set Nissanka for 26.
Mendis featured in yet another 52 run stand for the second wicket alongside Kusal Perera before the former was trapped leg before wicket by Bishnoi for 43.
Sundar provided a glimmer of hope by claiming wickets of Wanindu Hasaranga and Charith Asalanka in successive deliveries.
With 9 needed off the final 2 overs, the visitors took a gamble by bowling Rinku Singh and Suryakumar in the final 2 overs.
The move worked as both claimed 2 wickets each, to take the game to a Super Over as the scores were level after 20 overs.
Washington Sundar who was given the responsibility to bowl the Super Over bagged wickets of Perera and Nissanka in consecutive deliveries as the visitors needed only three runs.
Skipper Suryakumar finished it style by sweping Theekshana for a boundary off the very first delivery to complete a spectacular win.
With the win, the visitors won the three match series 3-0.
The focus now shifts to one dayers, where both teams will feature in the first of the three one dayers, starting on 2nd August, Friday in Colombo.
