Romario Shepherd smacked an unbeaten 10 ball-39 as Mumbai Indians registered their first win of the tournament by defeating Delhi Capitals by 29 runs in Mumbai on Sunday.
After being asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan got their side off to a quickfire start. The pair added 80 runs for the opening stand before Axar Patel broke the partnership by dismissing Rohit bowled for 49.
Suryakumar Yadav fell to Anrich Nortje for a second ball duck. Left hander Ishan Ishan then departed to a brilliant one handed stunner by Axar Patel for a 23 ball-42.
Tilak Varma (6) fell soon to Khaleel as Mumbai slumped to 121/4. However skipper Hardik Pandya along with Tim David added 60 runs for the fifth wicket stand before the former departed for 33 ball-39.
However Shepherd (39)* took on Nortje by smashing 32 runs off his final over to take MI to a mammoth score of 234/5 in their 20 overs.
In response, Delhi suffered an early jolt as David Warner (10) miscued a slower ball from Shepherd to Pandya at mid on. Prithvi Shaw and Abishek Porel added 88 runs for the second wicket stand before star bowler Jasprit Bumrah provided a vital breakthrough by cleaning up Shaw with a magnificent yorker for 66.
Porel then miscued a full toss from Bumrah to Tim David at long on for 41. Tristan Stubbs kept Delhi Capitals in the game by scoring a scintillating 25 ball-71. His knock included 3 fours and 7 sixes. However despite hos best efforts Delhi fell 29 run short of the target.
