Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a blazing hundred as India took firm control by reaching 196/2, with an overall lead of 322 at the end of Day 3 of the third test at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on Saturday.
Resuming their first innings on 207/2, Root’s poor run with the bat continued as he was dismissed for 18, while attempting a reverse scoop off Jasprit Bumrah to Jaiswal, who took a smart catch at second slip.
Kuldeep Yadav then got into the act by trapping Jonny Bairstow leg before wicket for a duck. The pair of Duckett and skipper Ben Stokes anchored the innings with a 35 run stand for the fifth wicket before the latter perished to Kuldeep Yadav straight to Gill at covers for a magnificent 153.
Stokes who looked good in his knock of 41, was dismissed while attempting a big hit. The hosts had two in two when Ben Foakes (13) chipped a length ball from Siraj to Rohit at mid-on.
India knocked over the tail quickly, as the visitors lost their last 8 wickets for 95 runs to be bowled out for 319.
In response, Rohit Sharma got India off to a solid start hitting James Anderson for consecutive fours in the very first over. He however was dismissed leg before wicket by Root while attempting a sweep.
Jaiswal and Shubman Gill took the score to 185, before the former had to retire hurt due to pain in the back.
Tom Hartley then gave England a much needed breakthrough by dismissing Rajat Patidar (0), chipping a catch to midwicket.
At the end of Day 3 Gill and nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav were unbeaten at the crease.
