Indian skipper Rohit Sharma scored a fantastic unbeaten 121 as India beat Afghanistan in the second Super Over in the third T20I at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Fareed Ahmad put India in the backfoot with wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal (4), Virat Kohli (0) and Sanju Samson (0). Azmatullah Omarzai dismissed the in form Shivam Dube caught behind for 1, as India slumped to 22/4.
Rohit (121)* along with Rinku Singh (69)* featured in a sensational unbeaten 190 run stand for the fifth-wicket stand to take the hosts to a mammoth score of 212/4 in their 20 overs.
Chasing 213, Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran got their side off to a fine start. The duo added 93 runs for the opening stand before the former perished to Kuldeep Yadav for 50.
Washington Sundar struck twice by dismissing skipper Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai to reduce to 107/3. The pair of Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Nabi added 56 runs for the fourth wicket stand before the latter perished while trying to take on Sundar for a breezy 16 ball-34.
With 19 needed off the final over, Naib smashed Mukesh Kumar for a four and six. With three needed off the final delivery, the all rounder managed to take two runs to take the game into the Super Over.
Batting first in the Super over, Gurbaz and Nabi smashed a four and a six each. In the final ball, there was some controversy, as Nabi took two extra runs after the throw deflected off his pads.
Despite consecutive sixes from Rohit off Omarzai, India were held to 16 as the match went into the second Super over.
Rohit, who had retired before the last ball in the first Super Over, came out to bat again as India took first strike in the second Super Over. The Indian captain hammered Fareed Ahmad for four and six off the first two deliveries. The bowler, fought back to restrict India to 11. The Indian skipper was run out off the fifth ball, attempting to get on strike.
With Afghanistan needed 12 runs off the final over, Ravi Bishnoi claimed 2 wickets, to take The Men in Blue to a fantastic win.
