Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway scored fine half centuries as Chennai Super Kings booked their spot in their play offs by defeating the Delhi Capitals by 77 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, openers Gaikwad and Conway got Chennai off to a fantastic start. The duo added 141 runs for the opening wicket before Chetan Sakariya broke the stand by dismissing the former caught at deep square leg by Rilee Rossouw for 79.
Left hander Conway featured in yet another 54 run stand for the second wicket alongside Shivam Dube before the latter miscued a hit to Lalit Yadav at long on off Khaleel Ahmed for a 9 ball-22.
New Zealand left hander Conway’s (87) fine innings ended in the penultimate over, when he sliced a slower delivery from Anrich Nortje to Aman Hakim Khan at long-on.
All rounder Ravindra Jadeja scored a quickfire 7 ball-20 to take Chennai to a massive score of 223/3 in their 20 overs.
Chasing 224, Delhi got off to a poor start as Prithvi Shaw (5) chipped a drive to Ambati Rayudu at mid-off off Tushar Deshpande.
Phil Salt then sliced a catch to Ajinkya Rahane at extra cover off Deepak Chahar for 3. Chahar then struck again by dismissing Rilee Rossouw for a first ball duck, as the Capitals slumped to 26/3.
The pair of David Warner and Yash Dhull resurrected the innings with a 49 run stand for the fourth wicket before the latter miscued one to Tushar Deshpande at backward point for 13.
Skipper Warner scored a magnificent 86 runs off 58 deliveries, but failed to get support from the others batsman as Delhi Capitals managed to reach 146/9 in their 20 overs, thereby losing the contest by 77 runs.
