Suryakumar Yadav scored a blistering maiden hundred as Mumbai Indians beat Gujarat Titans by 27 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday.
After being asked to bat first by Gujarat skipper, openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma got Mumbai off to a quickfire start. The duo added 61 runs for the opening stand before Rashid Khan dismissed both Rohit and Kishan for 29 & 31 respectively.
Rashid claimed his third wicket when Nehal Wadhera (15) dragged a delivery back onto the stumps, leaving Mumbai in a spot of bother.
Suryakumar along with Vishnu Vinod put on 65 runs for the fourth wicket before the latter (30) miscued a full toss off Mohit Sharma to Abhinav Manohar at deep backward square leg.
Yadav then reached his maiden IPL hundred in style by sweeping Alzarri Joseph for a maximum over backward square leg boundary off the final delivery to take Mumbai to a mammoth score of 218/5 in their 20 overs.
Chasing 219, Gujarat got off to a poor start as Wriddhiman Saha was trapped leg before wicket by Akash Madhwal for 2. Skipper Hardik Pandya (4) then nicked a delivery from Jason Behrendorff to wicket keeper Ishan Kishan behind the stumps.
GT suffered a major blow when the in form Shubman Gill (6) was knocked over while attempting a short-arm jab off Madhwal.
Vijay Shankar scored a quickfire 14 ball-29 before being falling to a googly from Piyush Chawla. The Titans lost half their side for 55, when Abhinav Manohar (2) was bowled by Kumar Kartikeya while attempting a pull.
The pair of David Miller and Rahul Tewatia added 45 runs for the sixth wicket before the former was caught right in front of the stumps with a slower delivery from Madhwal for a defiant 41 off 26 balls.
Rashid Khan kept the Titans in the hunt by scoring a magnificent unbeaten 79. His knock came off 32 balls with 3 fours and 10 sixes. However it was too late as Gujarat fell short of the target by 27 runs.
Mumbai Indians 218 for 5 (Suryakumar 103*, Rashid 4-30) beat Gujarat Titans 191 for 8 (Rashid 79*, Madhwal 3-31) by 27 runs.
