England’s last wicket pair of Stuart Broad and James Anderson survived the final two overs to help England salvage a famous draw against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Resuming at a overnight score of 30/0, Scott Boland provided the breakthrough by dismissing Haseeb Hameed for 9.
Dawid Malan fell cheaply to Nathan Lyon for 4. Cameron Green then claimed the well set Zak Crawley leg before wicket for 77, as the visitors slumped to 96/3.
Skipper Joe Root along with Ben Stokes added 60 runs for the fifth wicket before the former edged a Boland delivery to Alex Carey behind the stumps for 24.
Resuming the final session at 174/4, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow added 19 more runs to the score before Lyon dismissed the dangerous looking Stokes for 60.
Aussies skipper Pat Cummins then swung the momentum in hosts favour by dismissing Jos Buttler and Mark Wood, reducing England to 218/7.
There was a twist in the match when Smith removed Jack Leach (26) with three overs remaining in the day.

Australia take an unassailable 3-0 lead in Ashes series. The fifth and final match of the series will be played on January 14 at Hobart.
