James Anderson and Mark Wood struck late in the day to give England a hope as rain played spoil sport at the end of Day 1 of the fourth test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first the opening pair of David Warner and Marcus Harris got Australia off to a fantastic start. The duo added 51 runs for the first wicket before Stuart Broad provided the break through by dismissing Warner caught at second slip by Zak Crawley for 30.
Harris batted with lot of grit during his 109-ball 38 before edging a James Anderson delivery to Joe Root at first slip.
Mark Wood then struck a vital blow by dismissing Marnus Labuschagne for 28. Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja were unbeaten at the crease as the hosts ended Day 1 at 126/3.
