Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon shone with the ball as Australia gained firm control at the end of Day 3 of the second test on Saturday.

Resuming at a overnight score of 17/2, skipper Joe Root and Dawid Malan added 133 more runs before the former edged a Cameron Green delivery to Steve Smith at first slip for 62.

For Australia, Mitchell Starc was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/37 and Nathan Lyon claimed 3 wickets.

After taking a massive lead of 237, the hosts did not enforce the follow on. The Aussies lost the wicket of David Warner following a horrible mix-up with Marcus Harris for 13.

Harris (21)* and night watchman Michael Neser (2)* were unbeaten at the crease as they ended Day 3 at 45/1, with an overall lead of 282.
