England skipper Heather Knight led from the front by scoring a masterful 95 as England Women ended Day 1 of the one off test in Bristol at 269/6.
India handed debutants Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, Vastrakar, Rana and Bhatia their maiden cap, while for England Sophia Dunkley was the only player to make a test debut.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, England Women’s pair of Lauren Winfield-Hill and Tammy Beaumont got their team off to a solid start. The duo added 69 runs for the opening wicket before the former edged a Pooja Vastrakar delivery to wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia for 35.
Beaumont along with Heather Knight put on 71 runs for the second wicket before the former was caught brilliantly at short leg by young Shafali off Sneh Rana.
India were sloppy on the field as Natalie Sciever was dropped by Deepti at mid wicket off Harmanpreet Kaur.
However Natalie failed to capitalize on the opportunity as she was trapped leg before wicket by the Uttar Pradesh off-spinner for 42.
Skipper Heather Knight (95) was dismissed five run short of a well deserved hundred.
The 27-year-old Rana claimed the wickets of Amy Jones and Georgia Elwiss as the home side slumped to 251/6.
At the end of Day 1, Sophie Dunkley was batting on 12 while Katherine Brunt was on 7.
For India, debutant off-spinner Sneh Rana was the most successful bowler with figures of 3/77, while Deepti Sharma claimed 2 wickets.
