Shikhar Dhawan scored a fluent half century as Delhi Capitals beat Punjab Kings by 7 wickets in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
After being asked to bat first by Delhi skipper Rishabh Pant, Punjab Kings’ stand in skipper Mayank Agarwal got a reprieve early in his innings. Prabhsimran Singh sliced a Kagiso Rabada delivery to mid-off. Chris Gayle smashed a boundary and a six but was cleaned up for 13 by Rabada.
Agarwal along with debutant David Malan resurrected the innings with a 52 run stand for the third wicket before the latter was bowled by Axar Patel.
Deepak Hooda ran himself out following a mix up with Agarwal, leaving Punjab in a spot of bother at 88/4. Shahrukh Khan and Chris Jordan failed to make substantial contributions.
The Karnataka batsman Agarwal smashed Avesh Khan for two fours and a six to take his team to a competitive total of 166/6 at the end of 20 overs.
Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the bowlers for DC with figures of 3/36.
Chasing 167, the pair of Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan got their team off to a flying start. The duo added 67 runs for the opening wicket before the former was bowled by Harpreet Brar for 39.
Dhawan and Steve Smith put on 48 runs for the second wicket before Riley Meredith broke the stand by dismissing Smith caught at deep square leg.
Shimron Hetmyer smashed two sixes and a boundary in the 18th over to take his team home with 14 balls to spare.
