Left arm spinner Axar Patel claimed yet another five-wicket haul as India defeated England by an innings and 25 runs to win the four match test series 3-1 at Ahmedabad on Saturday.
Resuming at overnight score of 294/7, the pair of Washington Sundar along with Axar Patel frustrated the English bowlers by adding 71 more runs, before the latter was run out for 43.
Ben Stokes wrapped the innings by snaring the wickets of Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj. Sundar was left stranded on 96 as India were bowled out for 365 with an overall lead of 160. He knock came off 174 balls with 10 boundaries and a solitary six.
Stokes was the pick of the bowlers for England with figures of 4/89.
England’s second innings started disastrously as Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow in successive deliveries.
Axar Patel got into the act by claiming the wickets of Dom Sibley and Ben Stokes cheaply, as the visitors were reeling at 30/4.
Joe Root along with Ollie Pope added 35 runs for the fifth wicket, before the latter was stumped brilliantly by Rishabh Pant.
Root looked solid during his 72 ball 30 before Ashwin once again trapped him leg before wicket to a delivery which he should have been playing forward.
Ben Foakes and Dan Lawrence kept the Indian bowlers at bay with a 44 run stand for the seventh wicket. The former was eventually dismissed by Axar after Ajinkya Rahane took a brilliant low catch at slip.
Lawrence was the only batsman to put up a fight as he notched up his maiden half century. Ashwin however finished the innings by dismissing both Jack Leach and the 23 year old Lawrence to bag his 30th five-wicket-haul, as India won the game by an innings and 25 runs.
With this win Virat Kohli’s men have also sealed a spot in the ICC Test Championship Final where they will lock horns against New Zealand at Lords in June.
Rishabh Pant was declared the Man of the match and Ravi Ashwin was declared the Player of the Series.
