Shane Watson scored a rapid 44, as Chennai Super Kings registered their second win in IPL by defeating Delhi Capitals by 6 wickets at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, New Delhi on Tuesday.
The home side included Amit Mishra in place of Trent Boult, while Chennai Super Kings went in with an unchanged line up.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Delhi Capitals opening pair of Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan started steadily, as the duo added 36 runs for the opening stand, before Deepak Chahar claimed the wicket of Shaw for 24.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer along with Dhawan anchored the innings by adding 43 runs, before Imran Tahir dismissed the latter leg before wicket.
Dashing wicket keeper batsman Rishabh Pant continued his good form with some breathtaking shots, until he taken by Shardul Thakur at deep square leg boundary off Dwayne Bravo for a quickfire 25.
The West Indian all rounder dismissed Colin Ingram in the same over to change the complexion of the game. Dhawan’s painstaking half-century helped Delhi Capitals reach a modest score of 147 for 6 in 20 overs. The home side in the last five overs could manage only 29 runs.
Bravo was Chennai Super Kings best bowler as he claimed 3/33, while Chahar, Jadeja and Tahir bagged a wicket each.
Chasing a target of 148, Watson took on the Delhi Capitals bowlers early and added 21 runs for the first wicket with Rayudu who was dismissed cheaply for 5 runs.
The 37 year old Watson along with Suresh Raina played some magnificent shots as they added 52 runs for the second wicket, before veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra brought Delhi back into the game by claiming Watson and Raina for 44 & 30 respectively.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav added 48 runs for the 4th wicket to carry CSK to within touching distance of the target, before Kagiso Rabada bagged the wicket of the former for 27.
Dwayne Bravo faced 2 dot balls, before hitting the winning runs as CSK reached the target with 2 balls to spare.
Mishra was Delhi Capitals best bowler as he claimed 2 wickets, while Ishant Sharma and Rabada bagged a wicket each.
Shane Watson was declared the Player of the Match.
The sixth match of the Indian Premier League will be played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab at Kolkata on Wednesday.
