A very good crowd of 13,898 was in attendance at Newlands for the MI Cape Town vs Pretoria Capitals game (January 23, 2023). The crowd figure, announced on air during the MICT innings, was quite good for a Monday evening, and in fact was greater than the attendance for the tournament opener at the same venue.

PC opener Will Jacks lit up Newlands with a stunning 62 (27) that saw the Capitals race to 84 inside their first six overs. They eventually finished on 182/8 in their allotted 20, with the none of their remaining batsmen really able to replicate what Jacks had done against the likes of Archer, Rabada and Curran.

In reply, MICT collapsed after Dewald Brevis’ wicket as the Capitals comfortably won by 52 runs.

A good crowd of 10,992 was present at Supersport Park in Centurion as the Pretoria Capitals did the double over the Sunrisers Eastern Cape on January 14, 2023. The Supersport Park official attendance number was lower than the first games of the tournament at Newlands (11,115 for MICT vs PR) and Kingsmead (13,124 for DSG vs JSK), but it was still a fantastic turnout.

Will Jacks was the star of the show for the PTA based Capitals, with his 46 ball 92 helping them score over 200. A stunning all-round performance from Donovan Ferreira helped the Johannesburg Super Kings beat Durban’s Super Giants in their tournament opener at Kingsmead on January 11, 2023. A healthy crowd of 13,124 was in attendance in Durban for this clash, even better than the official 11,115 attendance for the tournament opener between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals.

Ferreira smashed 82* (40) as JSK recovered from 27/4 to post an imposing 190/6. DSG lost the plot at the end with the ball, with Ferreira and Romario Shepherd adding a whopping 86 runs in just under six overs.

DSG got off to an excellent start in their chase courtesy Kyle Mayers and Quinton de Kock, but Faf du Plessis’ captaincy helped JSK stay in the game. The former Proteas skipper recognised that spin was working on the track and used part timers Reeza Hendricks and Ferreira for four overs each. Pacers George Garton, Shepherd and Malusi Siboto together bowled only four between them. Durban also seemed to mess up their batting order with Wiaan Mulder sent ahead of Pretorius and Holder- their tactics left much to be desired, and Alzarri Joseph’s fine effort at the death saw JSK emerge winners by 16 runs. An official crowd of 11,115 was present for the first ever SA20 match- South Africa’s new T20 league, with MI Cape Town beating the Paarl Royals by eight wickets at Newlands.

MICT captain Rashid Khan won the toss and put Paarl in, but the men from Boland struggled and only managed 142/7 in their 20 overs. Jos Buttler top scored with 51 and David Miller made 42, but there wasn’t much from the rest. Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/27 in his four overs, including the crucial strike of Miller towards the end.

Paarl were also made to rue an easy dropped catch from Dane Vilas in the very first over of MICT’s chase- it gave Ryan Rickleton a life, and the southpaw didn’t need a second invitation as Dewald Brevis and he put on 90 for the first wicket to effectively put the game beyond Paarl’s reach.

Here are all the uniforms for the inaugural edition of the SA20 2023, the first ever season of the new CSA T20 league.

All six teams in the new CSA SA20 league are owned by IPL franchises, which explains the names of the clubs (Joburg Super Kings, Pretoria Capitals, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals and Durban’s Super Giants) and the colours of the jerseys.

Three teams- Durban SG, Pretoria Capitals and MI Cape Town have blue coloured shirts while Johannesburg Super Kings will be in yellow, Sunrisers EC in orange and Paarl Royals in pink.
