Talking Points & Analysis- India Women vs Australia Women T20 World Cup 2020 13432 Attendance

Leg spinner Poonam Yadav produced a match winning spell in her comeback fixture as India Women stunned defending champions Australia by 17 runs in the opening game of the Women’s T20 World Cup in Sydney on Friday.

Here are our talking points from the match that was played in front of a 13,432 record crowd.

Shafali Verma plays crucial innings at the top: After being put in by Australian skipper Meg Lanning, it was imperative that India started well, and they managed it thanks to Verma’s breezy innings at the top. The Rohtak teenager hit a quickfire 29 off 15, and had more hits to the fence (5 fours, 1 six) than the rest of the Indian batters put together.

Verma effectively hit 29 off two and a half overs- India themselves managed only 17 off the final three despite having six wickets in hand. It was a vital innings in the context of things on a slow, sluggish wicket.

India slow at the end: As mentioned above, India got only 17 runs off the final three overs of the game. They appear to depend too much on their top four for power hitting and acceleration- 17 in the final three with six wickets in hand is almost unheard of in this age of T20 cricket, even on a slow wicket. Five Talking Points- India Women vs South Africa Women 4th T20 October 1 2019 Surat

A disappointing performance from South Africa’s Women saw them slump to a 51 run defeat in the fourth T20 international at the Lalbhai Contractor Stadium. With the Proteas having also lost the first T20, this result sees India clinch the five game series 2-0.

Here are our talking points from the game.

Dropped catches galore from South Africa: The Proteas Women were their own worst enemies in the field. Lara Goodall, Nadine de Klerk and Ayabonga Khaka dropped three skiers between them in the first four overs. Smriti Mandhana was given FOUR lives before eventually falling for 13.

Had the fielding been good, the visitors would’ve certainly have been chasing a more achievable total rather than the steep 141 they had to in the end.

Proteas Women vs India Women Fourth T-20 2019

Young Shafali Varma comes good: One of the recipients of the Proteas’ generosity on the field was teenager Shafali Verma. Out for a duck in the first T20, she could’ve again been dismissed cheaply had Goodall held on to an easy catch at mid wicket. Verma’s powerful 46 off 33, studded with five fours and two sixes, was a key reason for India getting a match winning score.

Proteas Women disappointing with the bat: Five of India’s six batsmen all struck at over a run a ball- none of the Proteas managed to do so. Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt were the only players to cross double digits, and the visitors were never really in the chase, only mustering a feeble 89/7 in response to India’s 140/4. A 51 run defeat, by T20 standards, is a massive one, and South Africa were thoroughly outplayed here. India Women’s Squad for West Indies Tour Announced- Sushma Verma the only addition

The India Women’s squad for their upcoming tour of the West Indies has been announced and it features only one new name, with wicket keeper Sushma Verma added to the ODI side. With the exception of Verma’s addition, both ODI and T20 squads remain the same as the ones announced to play South Africa at home. India currently lead the T20 series against the Proteas 1-0, with the ODI’s yet to be played.

Verma’s inclusion could be seen as India requiring a backup wicket keeper on a long overseas tour- Taniya Bhatia is currently the national team’s first choice behind the wickets.

This is India’s first tour of the West Indies since 2012. They lost both the T20 and ODI series on that visit, going down 2-1 in the ODI’s and 3-2 in the T20’s.

India were captained by Anjum Chopra on that 2012 tour. Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur both played then, with the former now captaining India in the ODI’s and the latter at the helm of affairs in the T20 format.

Despite the near eight-year long gap between the two tours, conditions in the Caribbean will not be totally alien to India- the region also hosted the T20 Women’s World Cup last year. India won all four games in their group, including ones against eventual champions Australia and a strong New Zealand side, only to go down to England in their semi-final.

The ODI series against the Windies starts on November 1 in Antigua, with the other two one day internationals set to be played on the 3rd and 6th of November respectively. The T20 series will be played in St.Lucia (November 9, 10) and Guyana (November 14, 17, 20).

India Womens Squad for West Indies Tour 2019

Raj, Kaur and Veda Krishnamurthy are the only survivors from that 2012 squad for the visitors.

This tour could result in several key members of the squad- Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, having to withdraw from the Women’s Big Bash League as the two events will clash with each other.

Talking Points- India Women vs South Africa Women 1st T20 Surat September 2019

The first ever international game at Surat’s Lalbhai Contractor stadium went the way of India’s Women as they beat their South African counterparts by 11 runs earlier this evening. Here are our talking points from the clash.

Fantastic Deepti: Deepti Sharma turned this game on its head with her wonderful a spell of 4-3-8-3. Her first three overs were all maidens and she also picked up the wickets of Tasmine Brits, Nadine de Klerk and Shabnim Ismail. Essentially brought India back into the game after Pooja Vastrakar had gone for 18 in the opening over.

Dane van Niekerk sorely missed: South Africa’s women had a great chance to win this game, having initially restricted India to an under-par score of 130/8, and then scoring 18 runs off the first over of their innings. Unfortunately, their batsmen came a cropper- only three crossed double digits, and one of them was veteran Mignon du Preez, who effectively scored half of their runs (59 off 43). It was a game where they missed regular captain Dane van Niekerk and even all-rounder Marizanne Kapp and the hard hitting Chloe Tryon as well. New India World Cup Jersey – Nike Indian Cricket ODI Kit 2019

This is the new India cricket shirt 2019, the new Indian jersey for the 2019 Cricket World Cup and other games during the 19/20 season. The new India CWC top was officially unveiled by kit makers Nike on 1 March, 2019, just before the country’s ODI series against reigning WC champions Australia. It will be first worn by the national team in their clash against Justin Langer’s men on March 2, 2019.

From the Men’s team the likes of Indian skipper Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Prithvi Shaw and former captain MS Dhoni were seen modelling the new uniform. Key women’s team players like Harmanpreet Kaur and teenager Jemimah Rodrigues were also present at the event.

The new Indian WC 2019 jersey features the date as well as the latitude and longitude of the venues of their three World Cup triumphs so far (1983 World Cup at Lords, 2007 T20 World Cup in Johannesburg and 2011 World Cup in Mumbai)

The shirt also has tri colour detailing (the colours of the Indian flag) inside the neck. It features a darker shade of blue on the front, with a lighter one on the sleeves, as can be seen in the pictures below.
