Proteas Ladies vs England Women Attendance 7,507 T20 World Cup 2023 Semi Final Newlands Cape Town

South Africa’s women became the first senior team from the country to reach an ICC World Cup final as they stunned England in front of a 7,507 strong crowd at Newlands. The Proteas mens’ team have never reached a World Cup final and few would’ve expected the women to achieve that feat after they stumbled through the group stages (losing to Sri Lanka in the opener and also getting thrashed by Australia), but backed by a noisy, partisan home crowd in Cape Town, they upset Group 2 winners England, who had been unbeaten in the tournament coming into this semi-final.

Proteas skipper Sune Luus won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits began cautiously, scoring only 14 runs in the first four overs. However, like in the last game against Bangladesh, they began to accelerate, and reached 67/0 at the half-way stage.

At the end of the 16th over, South Africa were 125/1, but scored only 21 off the next three. However Katherine Brunt’s last over was a poor one, and Marizanne Kapp smashed her for three boundaries as the hosts picked up 18 from it and reached a competitive 164/4 after 20 overs.

In contrast to the Proteas Women, England began well, scoring 53 off the first 5 overs. A double wicket over from Shabnim Ismail, where she accounted for Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey (the latter brilliantly caught by Tazmin Brits) brought them back into the game, but Dani Wyatt and Nat Sciver kept the scoreboard ticking, and the visitors were 81/2 after 9 overs.

Nadine de Klerk’s tight bowling in the middle stages helped the Proteas Ladies immensely- she was introduced in the 10th over and finished with stunning figures of 4-0-17-1. More importantly, she also accounted for Sciver in the 17th over, leaving England 28 to get off the final three.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, openers Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney got Australia off to a solid start. The pair added 52 runs for the opening wicket before Radha Yadav broke the partnership by dismissing Healy (25), stumped by wicket keeper Richa Ghosh.

Meg Lanning got a reprieve on 1 when wicket-keeper Ghosh failed to hold on to a catch off Sneh Rana. In the very next over Shafali Verma also dropped a relatively simple catch at long on offered by Mooney on 32 (off the bowling of Radha)

However Shafali finally managed to hold on to a catch by dismissing the well-set Mooney off Shikha Pandey for 54, but the damage had been done by then, with the southpaw’s acceleration having set the stage for a strong finish. Proteas Ladies vs Bangladesh T20 World Cup attendance 6,623 Newlands Cape Town Group Stage February 2023

The key South Africa women vs Bangladesh Ladies T20 World Cup clash saw a crowd of 6,623 at Newlands for the hosts’ decider. The Proteas won the clash to book a spot in the semis thanks to a superior net run rate, and they will now face Group 2 toppers England in the semis.

Eng vs SA Women T20 WC Semi final

The attendance at Newlands for this Proteas Ladies clash was however lower than the 8,402 that turned out for the T20 World Cup opener between SA Women and Sri Lanka Women.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Proteas Ladies, and at times, this match brought back memories of their mens’ side against the Netherlands at the T20 WC last year- they had needed to beat the Dutch to qualify for the semis, but suffered a shock defeat and were eliminated instead.

However Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits held their nerve, and Bangladesh were always 20-30 short of a challenging total, which allowed South Africa to eventually win comfortably.
