England vs Australia Fifth Ashes Test Day 1 Oval Match Report 2023

Mitchell Starc claimed figures of 4/82 as Australia held firm control by bowling out England for 283 at the end of Day 1 of the fifth test at Oval on Thursday.

After being asked to bat first, England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett got their side off to a brisk start. The pair added 62 runs for the opening wicket.

Duckett who was dropped on 30 by Warner at slip off Pat Cummins, finally perished to Mitchell Marsh for a run a ball 41.

Cummins then struck by dismissing Crawley with a short of length delivery to Smith at second slip for 22. Joe Root then chopped a delivery from Josh Hazlewood back on to the stumps for 5.

The hosts could have been in further trouble as Alex Carey put down a simple chance of Harry Brook. The pair of Moeen Ali along with Brook added 111 runs for the fourth wicket stand before the former was castled by Todd Murphy for 34.

Starc then produced a peach off a delivery to dismiss England skipper Ben Stokes for 3. Hazlewood claimed his second wicket by dismissing Jonny Bairstow bowled for 4.

Brook missed out on a well deserved hundred, flashing at a wide delivery from Starc to Smith at second slip for 85.

Chris Woakes and Mark Wood frustrated the visitors by adding 49 runs for the eight wicket before the latter fell to Murphy for 28. Stuart Broad (7) then top-edged a short ball from Starc to Travis Head at cover.

England’s innings came to an close when Woakes (36) was caught by Head at wide fine leg, as the hosts were bowled out 283.

In reply, openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja got Australia off to a solid start. The duo added 49 runs for the opening stand before Woaked broke the partnership by dismissing Warner caught at slip by Zak Crawley for 24.

At stumps Australia reached 61/1 with Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne batting on 26 & 2 respectively.
