Dunith Wellalage claimed figures of 5/27 as Sri Lanka secured a thumping win by beating India by 110 runs in the third and final one day international at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, openers Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando got Sri Lanka off to a good start. The duo added 89 runs for the opening stand before Axar Patel broke the stand by dismissing the former while attempting a top edged slog sweep for 45.
Avishka along with Kusal Mendis added 82 runs for the second wicket stand before the former missed out on a well deserved hundred, as he was trapped leg before wicket by debutant Riyan Parag for 96. The visitors clawed their way back into the contest with wickets of Charith Asalanka (10), Sadeera Samarawickrama (0), Janith Liyanage (8) and Dunith Wellalage (2) as the hosts slumped to 199/6.
However Kamindu Mendis provided the finishing touches in the end by scoring an unbeaten 19 ball-23 to take their side to 248/7 in their 50 overs.
Chasing 249, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill got their side off to a steady start. The pair added 37 runs for the opening stand before the latter was cleaned up by Asitha Fernando while attempting a slog for 6.
Dunith Wellalage then struck a vital blow by dismissing skipper Rohit (35) caught behind the stumps while attempting a slog sweep.
Maheesh Theekshana then got into the act by dismissing Rishabh Pant (6) stumped while attempting a premeditated charge. Virat Kohli (20) was then trapped leg before wicket by an arm ball from Wellalage.
The rest of the batters faltered against the Lankans spinners, as they were bundled out for 138 runs in just 26.1 overs.
