Tom Hartley claimed figures of 7/62 in front of 27,352 crowd as England pulled off one of their greatest Test win by defeating India by 28 runs in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Resuming at 316/6, Rehan was caught behind the stumps off Jasprit Bumrah for 28. The pair of Pope and Hartley kept the hosts in bay by adding 80 runs for the eight wicket stand before the latter was cleaned up by Ashwin with a delivery that kept low.
Ravi Jadeja then dismissed Mark Wood for a duck. Pope missed out on a well deserved hundred, bowled by Bumrah as he attempted a reverse-scoop as the visitors were bundled out for 420 , with an overall lead of 230.
Chasing 231, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal got India off to a solid start. The pair added 42 runs for the opening stand before the latter was caught at short leg by Pope off Tom Hartley for 15.
Shubman Gill was caught at silly point for a second ball duck. Rohit Sharma looked good during his innings of 39, before being trapped right in front by Hartley.
Axar Patel, who was promoted in the order, fell for 17 in the first over after the break, chipping a return catch to left arm spinner. KL Rahul (22) was the next to go, trapped leg before wicket by Joe Root, with the one that was straighten from round the stumps.
India were in further trouble, as Ben Stokes produced a brilliant back handed flip to run out Ravindra Jadeja for 2. The pair of Ravichandran Ashwin and Srikar Bharat featured in a eighth-wicket stand of 57 runs before the latter fell for 28.
With the tail remaining, Ashwin was stumped while attempting to heave Hartley out of the ground. Mohammed Siraj (12) was also stumped by England debutant as the hosts were bowled out for 202.
With this win, England took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
