India vs South Africa First One Day International Johannesburg 17 December 2023 Match Report

Arshdeep Singh claimed figures of 5/37, as India beat South Africa comfortably by 8 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three match series at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, South Africa were rocked early as Arshdeep Singh dismissed both Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen with the score on 3.

The pair of Tony de Zorzi along with skipper Aiden Markram added 39 runs for the third wicket stand before the former mistimed a pull shot off Arshdeep to wicketkeeper KL Rahul for 28.

Heinrich Klaasen was then cleaned up by left arm pacer Arshdeep for 6. Avesh Khan then struck twice in the 11th over to put the visitors in the backfoot- first by cleaning up skipper Aiden Markram and then trapping Wiaan Mulder in front of the stumps as the Proteas slumped to 52/6.

Andile Phehlukwayo scored a valuable 49-ball 39 to take his side past the 100 run mark. In the end, India bowled South Africa out for 116 runs in 27.3 overs.

In response, Indian openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and debutant Sai Sudharsan got their side off to a solid start. The duo added 23 runs for the opening stand before the former was trapped leg before wicket by Wiaan Mulder in the fourth over for 5.

The pair of Sudarshan along with Shreyas Iyer featured in a 88 run stand for the second wicket before the latter perished while attempting a big hit off Andile Phehlukwayo for 52.

Tilak Varma came in and hit the winning runs as the hosts reached the target in just 16.4 overs. Sai Sudarshan remained unbeaten on 55.

India 118 for 2 (Sudharsan 55*, Iyer 52) beat South Africa 116 (Arshdeep 5-37, Avesh 4-27) by 8 wickets.
