Shubman Gill scored a breezy 63 as Gujarat Titans beat the Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets in the opening game at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday.
After being asked to bat first, Mohammed Shami got Titans upto a fine start by cleaning up Devon Conway (1) with a full delivery.
The pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali added 36 runs for the second wicket stand before the latter (23) nicked one to wicket keeper Wriddhiman Saha off Rashid Khan.
Rashid claimed his second wicket by dismissing Ben Stokes for 7. Gaikwad along with Ambati Rayudu featured in a 51 run stand for the fourth wicket before the latter was cleaned up by Josh Little for 12.
Gaikwad’s fantastic knock of 92 ended when he was caught off a high full toss from Alzarri Joseph while attempting a big hit.
Left hander Ravindra Jadeja (1) also perished in the same over, flicking the Gujarat pacer straight to deep midwicket.
Skipper MS Dhoni scored a quickfire 7 ball-14 to take Chennai to 178/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
Chasing 179, openers Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill got Gujarat off to a quickfire start. The duo added 37 runs for the opening wicket before the former miscued a delivery from Rajvardhan Hangargekar to Shivam Dube at deep third man for 25.
Gill along with Sai Sudharsan added 53 runs for the second wicket before the latter nicked a short delivery from Hangargekar to Dhoni for 17 ball-22.
Ravi Jadeja kept CSK in the contest by dismissing Hardik Pandya (8) bowled, as he missed the sweep. Gill’s fantastic innings of 63 ended, when he toe-ended a pull off Tushar Deshpande to Ruturaj at deep midwicket. His knock came off 36 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes.
With 23 needed off the 12 balls, Rashid Khan smashed Deepak Chahar for a six and four to bring the equation to 8 off the final over.
However Tewatia smashed Tushar Deshpande for six and four off consecutive deliveries to take Gujarat past the finish line.
