Devon Conway scored a magnificent 92 as New Zealand thumped Australia by 89 runs in the opening fixture of Super 12s T20 World Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
It was New Zealand’s first ever win in Australia since 2011, and they bowled the hosts out for 111 after having scored 200/3. There was also a fabulous catch from Glenn Phillips- a flying one in the area to dismiss Marcus Stoinis.
After being asked to bat first by Australia skipper Aaron Finch, openers Finn Allen and Conway got New Zealand off to a quickfire start. The pair added 56 runs for the opening wicket before the former was cleaned up by a yorker from Josh Hazlewood for a breezy 16 ball-42.
The left handed Conway then featured in a 69-run stand for the second wicket alongside Kane Williamson before the latter was trapped leg before wicket by Adam Zampa for a run ball 23.
However a late flourish from James Neesham (26*) helped Black Caps reach a mammoth score of 200/3 in their allotted 20 overs.
Conway remained unbeaten on 92. His knock came off just 58 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes.
Chasing 201, the hosts started disastrously by losing David Warner (5) to Tim Southee in the second over.
Left arm spinner Mitchell Santner and pacer Trent Boult wrecked Australia’s middle and lower order as the hosts were bowled out for just 111 in 17.1 overs.
Conway was adjudged the Player of the Match for his fantastic knock.
New Zealand 200 for 3 (Conway 92*, Allen 42) beat Australia (Maxwell 28, Southee 3-6, Santner 3-31) by 89 runs
