Young Prithvi Shaw has received his maiden call up to the ODI squad as a replacement for Dhawan. Shaw, already in the country as part of the India A side currently touring there, scored a scintillating hundred ball 150 in their warm up game in Lincoln against New Zealand XI on Sunday. After returning from his ban, the Mumbai youngster has been in good form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well.
Mumbai Indians all rounder Hardik Pandya was excluded from both the ODI and T20 squads after failing a fitness test.
The fast bowling attack comprises of the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur, while Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav will be the two wrist spinners. Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube have been tasked with filling the all-rounders’ slot.
In Dhawan’s absence, Lokesh Rahul is expected to open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma in both T20Is as well as in the ODIs. Another option could be to give young Shaw a go alongside Sharma, given that Rahul is also expected to keep wickets.
India’s tour of New Zealand kicks off with five T20Is- the first two will be played at Eden Park in Auckland while the next two will be played in Hamilton and Wellington respectively. Mount Maunganui’s picturesque Bay Oval stadium will play host to the fifth and final T20 international on February 2.
