India’s left arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav claimed his maiden five wicket haul, as the Men in Blue thumped the West Indies by an innings and 272 runs inside three days in the opening test at Rajkot on Saturday.
The day started with the West Indies in trouble at 94/6, but both overnight batsman Keemo Paul and Roston Chase batted steadily by adding 73 runs for the seventh wicket to keep the Indian bowlers at bay.
Umesh Yadav provided the much needed break through by getting rid off Paul, caught by Cheteshwar Pujara for 47.
Chase was the only other Windes player to offer some kind of resistance, before he was bowled by Ravi Ashwin for a well made 53.
The visitors were eventually bundled out for 181 runs in their first innings. Ashwin finished with 4/37.
While following on, The West Indies second innings began solidly as their opening pair of Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell added 32 runs for the first wicket, before the former was dismissed by Ashwin at the stroke of lunch for 10.
Powell and Shai Hope batted briskly as they both put on 47 runs for the second wicket, before Kuldeep broke through by dismissing Hope LBW for 17 runs.
The 23-year old left arm spinner then wrecked the West Indies middle order by claiming wickets of Powell, Sunil Ambris and Roston Chase.
Powell made a gritty 83 runs, before being caught by teenage debutant Prithvi Shaw.
Ravindra Jadeja finished the innings by claiming the final wicket of Shannon Gabriel as the home side crushed the visitors by 272 runs.
The 18-year old Shaw was adjudged the Man of the match for his wonderful knock of 134.
India go 1-0 in the two match series. The second and the final test will be played at Hyderabad on October 12.
