Markram, De Bruyn fail to impress against Board President XI
South Africa may still have to rely heavily on their veterans after youngsters Aiden Markram and Theunis de Bruyn failed to impress in their warm up game against the Sri Lankan Board President’s XI.
Both Markram and De Bruyn are expected to shoulder more responsibility this year following the retirement of AB de Villiers, but the duo found the going tough, with the former, impressive at home against Australia and India, getting a first ball duck and the latter making only 11.
With Quinton de Kock’s poor form also continuing, it appears that the Proteas will once again have to rely heavily on the veteran duo of Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla. Skipper Du Plessis was the top scorer for the visitors, scoring 79 off just 85 balls. Amla, the captain on South Africa’s last tour to Sri Lanka, wasn’t too far behind either, making 78 before he retired.
The other notable contributions came from opener Dean Elgar (43) and middle order batsman Temba Bavuma (58). However the Proteas collapsing from 223/3 to 338 all out on a fairly placid track would not have impressed coach Otis Gibson.
South Africa’s first test against Sri Lanka begins on Thursday at Galle.
