Africa Qualifiers T20 World Cup 2024- Zimbabwe fail to progress; Uganda go through

Uganda have created history by qualifying for the T20 World Cup for the first time in their history. The Cranes beat Rwanda in their final group game to seal qualification behind hosts Namibia. The 2024 T20 World Cup will therefore have South Africa, Namibia and Uganda as its three African representatives.

Why didn’t Zimbabwe qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup?

Two early defeats- one to Nambia and the other to Uganda, sealed Zimbabwe’s fate. The Chevrons were in particular left ruing the defeat to Uganda, where Tendai Chatara’s 20-run 18th over proved very costly. Zimbabwe had a better net run rate than Uganda, but finished two points lower than them.

T20 Africa World Cup Qualifying 2024

Kenya started the campaign well and were in the hunt for qualification until their penultimate game against Uganda, but lost a crucial game against the Cranes, and then capitulated against Zimbabwe in their final clash to ultimately settle for fourth spot.

India vs Australia Final Attendance 92,453 Ahmedabad 2023 Cricket World Cup November 19 Narendra Modi Stadium Motera

Australia lifted their sixth Cricket World Cup title in front of a stunned 92,453 strong crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad as they beat hosts and favourites India. Opener Travis Head was again instrumental in their victory, just as he had been in the semifinal against South Africa in Kolkata. The hosts then lost Shreyas Iyer in the very next over and both Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were forced to slow down and consolidate.

Australia however continued to take wickets at intervals and India could only manage 240 in their allotted 50 overs- comfortably around 30-40 runs lesser than par. South Africa vs Australia Attendance 47,825 Eden Gardens Kolkata 2023 Cricket World Cup 2nd Semi Final

A fine-all round performance from Travis Head helped Australia edge South Africa in a thriller in front of a 47,825 strong crowd at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The three-wicket victory saw Pat Cummins’ men book a spot in Sunday’s final against hosts India in Ahmedabad.

SA v AUS 2023 Semifinal

Perhaps wary of their own tendency to “choke” while chasing, Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma opted to bat first after winning the toss. It however backfired spectacularly as Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood reduced them to 24/4 under cloudy conditions.

Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller put South Africa on the path of recovery but just as Klaasen was threatening to open up, Cummins introduced the part-time spin of Head, and he accounted for Klaasen and all-rounder Marco Jansen in successive balls to peg the Proteas back again. Rassie van der Dussen scored a fine unbeaten 76 in front of 10,927 crowd as South Africa beat Afghanistan by 5 wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Friday.

Afghanistan went in with Same XI, while South Africa made two changes, with Phehlukwayo and Coetzee coming in for Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi.

Ibrahim Zadran fell soon after for 15. Maharaj claimed his second wicket of the innings by dismissing skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (2) leaving their side in a spot of bother at 45/3.

Rahmat Shah along with Azmatullah Omarzai put on 49 runs for the fourth wicket stand before Lungi Ngidi broke the stand by claiming Rahmat for 26.

Afghanistan lost a bit of momentum in the middle stages, but a superb unbeaten 97 by Azmatullah Omarzai helped them reach 244 in their allotted 50 overs.

The number was bigger than the turnout for the opening game (47,518) of the tournament between England and New Zealand at this very venue a month ago.

Adam Zampa was instrumental in Australia’s win- his quickfire 19-ball-29 helped them reach 286, his three wickets (including the key ones of Stokes and Ali) halted England just as they were threatening to take the game away, and he took an excellent late catch to end David Willey’s cameo with the bat.

Somewhat oddly, Black Caps skipper Tom Latham opted to put South Africa in after winning the toss, and it backfired badly as centuries from Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen took the Proteas to an imposing 357/5 in their 50 overs.

Pakistan vs South Africa Chennai 2023 Attendance 29,983 Chepauk MA Chidambaram World Cup

A very fine crowd of 29,983 was in attendance at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai as South Africa beat Pakistan in a thriller. The win took the Proteas to the top of the table on NRR.

There were always doubts about the Proteas’ ability to chase in pressure situations following their loss to the Netherlands earlier in the tournament, and they very nearly made a mess here of what was otherwise seemingly a straightforward chase, going from 206/4 after 33 overs to 250/8 in the 42nd over.

PAK vs SA Cricket World Cup 2023

However the troika of Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi and Tabraiz Shamsi hung on gamely and despite a wonder catch by Haris Rauf in his final over to dismiss Ngidi, it came down to 5 to win, with the pacers having finished their spells. Babar Azam oddly tossed the ball to Mohammad Nawaz instead of specialist spinner Usama Mir, and the left armer bowled one down leg than Maharaj was able to tuck away to the boundary to give South Africa a famous victory.

A very good official crowd of 23,284 was present at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk as Afghanistan stunned Pakistan by eight wickets in Chennai to register their first ever WC win over their neighbours.

PAK vs AFG Chennai Crowd

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Pakistan openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq got their side off to a solid start. The pair added 56 runs for the opening stand before the latter perished to Azmatullah Omarzai for 17.

Skipper Babar Azam (70) and Abdullah Shafique (54) scored half-centuries at the top, while Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed scored valuable runs down the order to take Pakistan to a respectable score of 282/7 in their 50 overs.

Left arm spinner Noor Ahmad was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-49.

In reply, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran got Afghanistan off to a fantastic start. The duo put on 130 runs for the first wicket before the former top edged a delivery from Shaheen Shah Afridi to Usama Mir for 65.

Zadran missed out on a well-deserved century, scoring 87 off 113, which included 10 fours. However Rahmat Shah (77)* along with skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (48)* shared an unbeaten 96 run stand for the third wicket to take Afghanistan to an emphatic 8 wicket win.

Afghanistan will next play Sri Lanka at the MCA Stadium in Pune on October 30.

Afghanistan 286 for 2 (Ibrahim 87, Rahmat 77*, Gurbaz 65, Shahidi 48*, Hasan 1-41) beat Pakistan 282 for 7 (Babar 74, Shafique 58, Noor 3-49, Naveen 2-52) by eight wickets

South Africa vs Netherlands Dharamshala 2023 Attendance 11,224 Cricket World Cup 17 October

A very decent crowd of 11,224 was in attendance at the HPCA Stadium in picturesque Dharamshala as the Netherlands pulled off one of the greatest upsets in their cricket history by beating South Africa by 38 runs.

Holland were put in by SA skipper Temba Bavuma- not surprising given the overcast conditions in Dharamshala that had delayed the start of play by two hours, and were 140/7 at one stage before skipper Scott Edwards’ sparkling half century, aided by timely cameos from former Protea Roelof van der Merwe and tailender Aryan Dutt, saw them pick up a staggering 104 runs off the last 9 overs.

SA v NED

The Dutch used spin in the powerplay and South Africa started cautiously in their powerplay. The loss of double WC centurion Quinton de Kock to Colin Ackermann saw a mini collapse as the Proteas went from 36/0 to 44/4. Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller steadied things before Klaasen pulled a wide delivery from Logan van Beek straight down the throat of Vikram Singh at third man. Van Beek also accounted for Miller and despite the best efforts of Keshav Maharaj at the end, South Africa simply had too much to do, and fell short by 38 runs. A very good crowd of 26,440 was in attendance at the Kotla (Arun Jaitley Stadium) in Delhi as Afghanistan produced a massive upset by beating defending champions England.

Afghanistan were put in by England skipper Jos Buttler and got off to a fine start courtesy Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 57-ball-80. Gurbaz was however run out in a mix-up with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, and Afghanistan eventually managed 284, far lesser than the 300-350 they were threatening to get when Gurbaz was at the crease.

The attendance was less than half the number that had turned up in Chepauk for India against Australia last weekend, but understandable given this was a weekday game between two non-local sides.

Daryl Mitchell was the star of the show for the Black Caps- his unbeaten 67-ball-89 saw them ace the target comfortably after a slow start at the beginning. New Zealand would also have been happy to see skipper Kane Williamson among the runs- he made 78 before retiring hurt.

South Africa vs Sri Lanka Delhi Attendance 15,496 Cricket World Cup 2023 Kotla

Aiden Markram scored the fastest ever century in ODI World Cup history as South Africa beat Sri Lanka in front of a 15,496 strong crowd at the Feroz Shah Kotla (Arun Jaitley Stadium) in their CWC 2023 opener.

Fastest CWC Centuries

The Proteas, put in by Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, lost skipper Temba Bavuma early, and were 48/1 at the end of the first ten overs as the Lankan pacers kept things tight. However runs began to flow as both Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen settled in, and Markram’s 49 ball century took them to an imposing 428/5 in their allotted 50 overs (another WC record, beating the previous highest team total made by Australia against Afghanistan back in 2015)

Kusal Mendis gave Sri Lanka a brief glimmer of hope with a stunning 42 ball 76- at one point it looked like he could possibly break Markram’s fastest 100 run record, but once he edged a Rabada delivery to Klaasen behind the stumps, Sri Lanka’s hopes faded. Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka both made half centuries- the former aided by two dropped catches by Van der Dussen and substitute Andile Phehlukwayo, and Sri Lanka managed to cross the 300 mark in their chase to reduce the hit on their NRR.

Marco Jansen went for 2/92 in his 10- although figures don’t do justice to how well he bowled. A more clinical performance in the field might have seen a bigger winning margin for the Proteas, but Temba Bavuma and Rob Walter would be pretty happy, all things considered, with a 100 run victory in their CWC 2023 opener.

India vs Australia Chepauk Attendance 33,190 World Cup 2023 MA Chidambaram Chennai

An official attendance of 33,190 was registered at the MA Chidambaram (Chepauk) Stadium in Chennai for India’s opening game of the 2023 World Cup against Australia. The attendance number was shown on television towards the end of India’s chase.

IND v AUS World Cup attendance 2023

The crowd number was slightly higher than the the 32,921 fans who attended the CSK SRH IPL game at the same venue back in April 2023 earlier this year.

Australia won the toss here and opted to bat first, but could only score 199 as they struggled to cope with the slow nature of the pitch and India’s troika of spinners- Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and local man Ravi Ashwin. Steve Smith top scored for the visitors with 46.

IND v AUS Chepauk

In response, Mitchell Starc got the visitors off to a dream start by snaring left hander Ishan Kishan, caught at first slip by Cameron Green for a golden duck while attempting an expensive drive.

Josh Hazlewood then pegged the hosts back with wickets of skipper Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer as Men in Blue slumped to 2/3.

Star batsman Virat Kohli got a reprieve on 12, when Mitchell Marsh dropped a relatively simple catch at square leg following a lack of miscommunication with wicket keeper Alex Carey behind the stumps.

Kohli capitalized on the opportunity as he went on to add 165 runs for the fourth wicket alongside KL Rahul. The former was eventually dismissed to a fine sharp catch by Marnus Labuschagne at midwicket while attempting a pull for 85.

Rahul (97)* along with Hardik Pandya (11)* shared an unbeaten 34 run stand for the fifth wicket, as The Men in Blue overhauled the target with 52 balls to spare.

India will next square off against Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday, October 11.

South Africa record vs Sri Lanka in ICC Events (World Cup + Champions Trophy) | Proteas H2H v SL

Here is a look at South Africa’s record against Sri Lanka in ICC events (World Cup + Champions Trophy) ahead of their 2023 World Cup opener in Delhi this weekend.

Somewhat interestingly, the Proteas have a very good H2H record against Sri Lanka in ICC events, winning 10 of the 14 games between the two sides so far. The only defeats came back in 1992 (World Cup) and 2009 & 2014 (T20 World Cups).

The Proteas beat SL in both the 2015 (quarterfinal) and 2019 World Cups and will be looking to make it a hat trick of victories at the Ferozshah Kotla this weekend.

England vs New Zealand Ahmedabad Attendance 47,518 2023 Cricket World Cup First Match Crowd Motera

A very good official crowd of 47,518 was registered at the Narendra Modi Stadium (Motera) in Ahmedabad for the 2023 Cricket World Cup opener between England and New Zealand. The crowd was thin at the beginning (the stadium has a capacity of over 100,000) but it improved as the evening progressed, with cooler temperatures in the night for spectators.

Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra both scored fine hundreds as the Black Caps gained a modicum of revenge for their 2019 final loss by thumping England by 9 wickets.

Eng vs NZ CWC 2023

After being asked to bat first, England made 282/9 in their allotted 50 overs- it was the first time in World Cup history that all eleven batsmen of the same team got into double digits. However wickets fell at regular intervals, and England weren’t quite able to have set batsmen take on New Zealand’s fourth and fifth bowlers (Ravindra, Phillips and Neesham). Joe Root top scored for them with 77 (86) Continue reading “England vs New Zealand Ahmedabad Attendance 47,518 2023 Cricket World Cup First Match Crowd Motera”
