Many records tumbled in what was quite a bizarre, but remarkable day of test cricket at Newlands in Cape Town. Hosts South Africa were bundled out for just 55 after opting to bat first- their lowest ever test total since re-admission, and India went from 153/4 to 153 all out in their innings in a matter of 11 deliveries- the first time in test cricket that a team has lost their last six wickets without adding a run.
Mohammed Siraj was the pick of India’s bowlers, with his 6/15 destroying the Proteas batting.
South Africa interestingly had only one duck in their 55 all out. India, by comparison, had 7 0’s in their 153 all out scorecard (including tail-ender Mukesh, who was unbeaten on 0)
This was Tristan Stubbs’ test debut and the last test match for Dean Elgar, and both players got dismissed twice on the same day!
Markram has been unconvincing in his recent test knocks, but managed to fight his way to 36 not out (also the same number that SA were trailing by at the end of Day 1). With the hosts’ batting looking quite thin after the inclusion of Keshav Maharaj at the expense of an extra batsman, it’s mostly up to David Bedingham and him to give South Africa some hope, but this is otherwise mostly looking like a 2 day test, with India strong favourites despite their second innings collapse.
